Of Sicily’s 115,686 hectares (over 285,866 acres) of vineyards, 64% of which produce white grape varieties, there are 710 wineries on the island, which turn out 200 million bottles per year, including one DOCG (Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed) and 22 PDO (Protected Denomination of Origin) wines. These are amazing numbers that tell the reality of this mini continent: Sicily. These numbers testify to the vitality of the Sicilian vineyards, which today best represent the quality of the products made in Sicily. The 22 PDO denominations produced around the island, at various elevations with varying sun exposure, represent little known gems of world excellence in wine production. The DOCG, Cerasuolo di Vittoria, and the PDO, Marsala (the first wines to receive this recognitions,) are the most representative Sicilian wines. In particular, there are four wine denominations from Sicily that X Wine wishes to share with the world: Sicilia, Marsala, Siracusa, and Pantelleria.
Featuring these four wine denominations along with a handful of Sicilia DOC and Terre Siciliane IGT wines in tastings and seminars narrated by the protagonists of this project, X Wine offers the opportunity to experience diverse aspects of the Sicilian wine production. The passion of these producers is yet another element of the quality of Sicilian wines.
